A "Birth Story"

Last week, Photography by Kelly had the honor of working with this couple as they welcomed their newborn son into the world.

Mom is a long time friend of my daughter. Baby's mom had us on speed dial that day. She arrived at the hospital, got settled into her room and let us know her status.

As the day progressed, we stayed in touch with mom. Then we got the text! Arriving at the hospital, we found her room. As the time slipped by, the baby was getting closer and closer to being born. Mom and dad were both excited as well as baby's aunt.

Around 8 that evening, mom sent her final pre-baby status update to social media. The warmer was getting warmed up, nurses were making preparations for the new baby. Mom had time to take a short nap before the work began.

About 9:30 that evening, Baby C came into the world with an awesome set of lungs, tiny toes, tiny fingers and brown hair. Such a wonderful blessing for his parents. Congratulations to his parents and his big brother!

Fall Mini Sessions

It's been awhile since we blogged! Got caught up in kids going back to school, booster meetings, football games and marching bands...... You know how it is the month or so after school begins!

With marching band season upon us, a.k.a football season, the leaves will begin to change (in some cases trees are already changing colors), cooler weather, sweaters, jackets...ah FALL! One of my favorite seasons. 

With that in mind, we have scheduled two dates for fall photos. One date will be on the Blue Ridge Parkway (Oct 12). Currently there are four time slots left. Click here to schedule your session.

The second date will open up after October 13. If you are more interested in the November date, message us for times available and location. These sessions will be in the morning of November 9.

Either date will be $65 for 25 minutes and you will receive 25 complimentary Christmas cards. Perfect for families up to 6.

Lura & Hao ~Engagement~

I have known Lura for a long time, meeting her first at church when she was young girl. When she began to look for colleges, I suggested touring my Alma mater. She did with her parents and resulted in graduating with a degree in education from the college. So now, we are fellow alumnae! Go Bears! :)

Lura met Hao (pronounced How) about two years ago. They began dating and in February of this year, he surprised her in New York City with asking the "big" question. He had already met with her parents and got their blessings. He made arrangements with someone to follow them as they walked through Central Park so the big moment could be photographed (oh how I would have loved to been there for that!).

From all of that, I knew their engagement session would be fun. Our first time out, it rained cats and dogs. So, we rescheduled. The evening we met was beautiful! The couple will be married in August. We wish them all the best and many, many years of happily wedded bliss.

Her ring was designed with her grandmother's diamond as the center piece. Stunning!

Main Street USA

Have you ever noticed old buildings in the town where you reside? Growing up in rural NC, there were a lot and some still stand, empty, desolate, forgotten.

Forgotten why? Owners neglect the buildings. Towns seem not to care, about the history, the preservation of  the old. People look at old buildings as "eyesores". The history is forgotten. The former splendor of the buildings is forgotten.

One such building will be demolished in the town where I reside tomorrow. It has been empty for as long as I can remember. It was once (built in 1912) a grand, state of the art hotel. It hosted around 20 rooms for weary travelers and school teachers at the local schools. Travelers visited the healing mineral springs nearby. Teachers probably stayed for the school year and returned to their families once the school year concluded.

The hotel, named for the builder, Dodson is said to have had a grand piano that a gentleman from Florida would come and tickle the ivories for travelers. It boasted electricity, running water, it's own sewer system and a wrap around covered porch.

Preservation takes money. Sadly far too any people feel it is better to destroy rather than save. Can you imagine with me for a moment? Imagine if the owner had seen the beauty in the building, the details that Mr. Dodson put into the building. Imagine the building being used for a visitor center to the town, the county, the area around. Imagine wedding receptions being held there, with a baby grand playing beautiful music. Imagine being able to have a cup of coffee or glass of good southern sweet tea at a small table on the wrap around porch in a quaint bed and breakfast.

Now imagine all the people who stayed there over night, for days, weeks, months. The conversations, the laughter and perhaps tears. Do you wonder what they talked about? Do you think they would rather have seen the building be preserved?  Now imagine that money is no object. Can you picture what I do? A place to gather with friends and families?

Imagining is not enough now. The building will be torn down, along with all the memories and history. It is shame, as the building is only 100 years old. Buildings much older than this one still stand.  "What if" is too late now.

Meet Hosanna!

A while back, on the Face book page, we announced that we were looking for someone to try out a location we wanted to use for a session. Hosanna answered the call. We met up one afternoon at Starbucks to go over the details.

We soon discovered that Hosanna is an aspiring actress and has appeared in Kernersville Little Theater productions.  She had just returned from L.A. and was working on a project for her college application. Hosanna is graduating this June. In August she will attend college in California (where her mother attended) and study film making. She plans to return to NC once she completes college and work in the film industry here in NC. (She said there are not enough jobs in CA to warrant her staying in the Los Angeles area.)

Watch for her! She has big plans and we are wishing her all the best as she pursues her dreams!

A Wedding in the Park

      Three weeks ago, Photography by Kelly had the pleasure of photographing a small wedding in the park. I have known the couple for three or so years. She approached the idea of my photographing her wedding one afternoon as she looked at her daughter's Easter photos that I had recently taken.

     Excited and nervous that she asked, as this would be the first wedding for Photography by Kelly, she asked if her wedding would be my first. Knowing that she knew that put me at ease a little. 

     As the day came, we discussed what she wanted, signed contracts and prepared. The day of the wedding, we were weather watching. Thankfully the rain, that threatened to force her wedding in the park inside her groom's parents' house, held off! 

    The wedding was small and intimate in a park gazebo. Perfect for their day. Wedding party was small, their parents and his grandfather, the pastor and his wife. As weddings go, it was beautiful. 

    We, at Photography by Kelly, wish the happy couple many, many happy years together!

      

A Baby's First Year in Photos

In January of 2012, a elementary school friend contacted me about taking her expectant grandson's photos once he was born. Of course, I said yes I would!

Aiden was born in April 2012 and the planning began. The first time meeting little Aiden, it stormed horribly and our outdoor session moved to his Mimi's living room. He did not want anything to do with having his photograph taken. After about two hours, we decided to reschedule. 

His first official photo shoot, he was just a little shy of 3 months old (top left). Needless to say, he did great and his parents joined in on some of the photos as well. In October, we met up to take his six month photos. Wow, he was not a baby anymore! Full of energy and full of laughter, that was his photo shoot at 6 months (top right).

In February, his mimi and I began planning his nine month photo shoot. My trusty assistant (a.k.a my daughter) got props together and off we went to a new location. Just as his six month photo shoot had been, he was full of energy and wanted to play with anything within reach. He had a blast riding (standing) in the vintage stroller we used in his photos. (bottom right)

We met recently for his 12 month photos. And true to history, this time, he was not crazy about it like the first time we met. (bottom left) We were able to get a few shots, but his mimi and I decided to reschedule. 

Aiden has grown so much in a year and we have been blessed to be a part in recording his growth in photographs. With his big, gorgeous blue eyes, he will surely knock some unsuspecting young lady off her feet one day when he is much, much older of course! The camera has loved his eyes during this past year.

Love is in the air!

Time flies. 

I first came to know Morgan and her family through the church we all attended. A few years later, I was called to sub teach in a 4th grade classroom at a local elementary school. As it turned out, I ended up teaching that class until the end of the school year (January - June) with Morgan and the rest of her classmates.  Morgan moved away from our little town when she was in middle school. We have stayed in touch through the power of Facebook.

A while back the photography page hosted a couples photo contest. Morgan entered and ultimately won the contest. This week, I was honored to photograph her with her fiance. As we traveled through the northern part of our county, we stopped at various locations to take photos. At one point, Morgan not quite sure where we were, asked. :) This was a really fun photo shoot. We ended up at the farm where my daddy was born and raised. 

Morgan and Justin will be married this weekend. Justin is in the Marines and will be headed out to the Middle East in a few weeks. Keep them both in your thoughts. May you have many years together!

Our First Maternity Shoot!

We recently had the pleasure of photographing Candace. Candace is expecting a baby boy, could be tomorrow when he arrives! Candace and her husband, Mohammad E. have been married four years. They enjoy visiting the beach and find time in their busy life as restaurant owners to spend time with their beautiful daughters visiting local parks. When at home, they enjoy playing with their pets, two goats and one dog. 

Candace agreed to be our "maternity model". You will see her in promotional pieces on our website and Facebook page. If you are expecting and know Candace, she can tell you about her session and perhaps have a coupon for your very own maternity shoot. We are looking forward to our partnership with Candace and taking more photos after baby E arrives.

It's Spring!

Finally! It is Spring! After a long, cold, snow-less winter, it is beginning to warm up. Flowers are blooming, at least here in NC, and the birds can be heard singing.

Easter will be here in a week. Mother's Day will be here also before we can turn around. A couple of weeks ago, we held a mini session for Easter/Spring Photos. We photographed 3 sessions and each one was different! Even the Easter bunny made an appearance.

With Spring upon us, many begin thinking about having photos taken. Some turn to the big box, print while you wait, studios. Others turn to home based photographers who shoot on location and use professional print labs to prepare your images.

Spring photos make excellent Mother's Day gifts. When was the last time your mother was blown away with the gift you gave her? How old are the family photographs in her home? (If they are like one of my own, it was taken long before my youngest daughter was born, before my dad passed away.) Are you ready now? Contact us to schedule your personalized photo session. What is your "Super Bowl?"

Last night, as most of the nation watched , it was brother verses brother in New Orleans. Baltimore Ravens and the San Francisco Forty Niners. Now, I do not watch the game for the game, I am not a huge professional sports fan. I watch for the commercials and who doesn't, right?

The commercials that were my favorites dealt with family, our military and our nation. Can you guess? No? Well, the ones I liked best were the Doritos, Jeep and Dodge. What father could not turn down their daughter to play dress up in exchange for a bag of Doritos? She learned quickly the way to her dad's heart! Jeep did an outstanding job recognizing our military and their families! And then, Dodge. "On the eighth day, God made a farmer." Yes, Dodge made the night for a lot of us with that heart felt, God filled message. (Kind of makes you want to go out and buy a Dodge, right?!)
